Mahboubian Collection, New York

A brief history of the Marlik Zebu

This lustre-glazed ceramic depicting a zebu bears witness to an original, specifically indigenous development, the Marlik civilisation, named after a valley in northern Iran near the Caspian Sea. With their pastoral traditions, these peoples produced remarkable bronze, gold and terracotta tableware. The inspiration for the shapes came mainly from the animal world, but a few pieces with anthropomorphic forms and combinations of man and animal have survived. This bull, with its characteristic hump at the back of its head and its lustrous red colour, is one of many examples of pottery. It was undoubtedly a ritual vessel.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0803/7505/4633/files/taureau-zebu-marlick-mesopotamie-iran.jpg?v=1698158749
