A number of archaeological sites were excavated in this region in the 1950s, and cultures with clearly different artistic styles were found within a few dozen kilometres of each other. One example is the red bulls of Marlick.
The common feature of these nomadic cultures is the manufacture of terracotta objects, with an emphasis on shapes rather than decoration. The craftsmen drew much of their inspiration from the natural world around them, which gives us an idea of the presence of ostriches in the region. Ostriches are recognisable by their large bodies and long necks. The ergonomics of the object were also studied: the neck to fill it also served as a handle, and the height of the neck prevented the liquid from evaporating.

Terracotta reproduction of an Ibex
Art of Mesopotamia, Amlash

Handcrafted in Brittany, France
Hand-decorated

Dimensions : H 28 x W 11 x D 28 cm

Date and origin

800 BC
Amlash

Original conservation site

The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York, USA

A little history about the Ibex

This rhyton, from the Greek rhein, to sink, is a ritual terracotta vessel representing an ibex. It was found in north-west Iran, where zoomorphic pottery was very popular, particularly during the Bronze and Iron Ages. The shape of this pottery is simple, but demonstrates great technical mastery. It is made up of basic geometric shapes, cylinders and cones that are turned and then assembled. Two openings have been made, one on the back to fill the container, the other, smaller, in the middle of its chest to pour. The legs are simple and disproportionate to the body, to ensure stability. On the other hand, the potter has respected the anatomical shape of the animal's head without going into detail, its goatee being just a triangle.
Only incisions highlight the eyes, the hooves and the veins of the horns.
In Mesopotamian mythology, Mamitu was the goat-headed goddess of destiny. It probably belongs to the 2,000-year-old Amlash culture. It is identified by the name of the site where it was found in the 1950s, north of the current borders of Iran. This object is quite original in terms of its shape and, above all, the gestures of the figure. The Amlash cultures developed an important craft of utilitarian objects inspired by nature. But most of the objects have neutral, expressionless representations, whether of animals or human figures. What is developed is the functionality of the object. Here, the woman is staged, which gives her this dynamic impression.
